HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's proprietary image format introduced with iOS 11 in 2017. Every iPhone since the iPhone 7 (running iOS 11+) saves photos in HEIC format by default. While HEIC offers superior compression (HEIC files are roughly 50% smaller than equivalent JPEG files at the same visual quality), its compatibility outside the Apple ecosystem remains limited.
The biggest problem with HEIC: Windows computers cannot open HEIC files natively without installing the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store (which requires a Windows 10 update). Android phones do not support HEIC. Most online portals — including every Indian government exam portal (IBPS, SSC, UPSC, NTA, RRB), passport application portals, and visa application systems — reject HEIC uploads and require JPEG. Our HEIC to JPG converter solves this instantly, entirely in your browser.

WebP is an image format developed by Google, introduced in 2010 and now widely used across the web. Google Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari all support WebP natively. However, WebP files cannot be opened by older software, many image editors, or Windows Photo Viewer without additional codecs. When you save an image from a website using right-click → "Save image as", it is often saved as WebP — even if it appears as a JPEG on the page.

When saving images from Google Chrome, try right-click → "Copy image" and paste into Paint or a photo app instead of "Save image as" — Chrome saves as WebP by default. Or just convert the WebP to PNG/JPG here after saving.

PNG files use lossless compression — every pixel is stored exactly as captured. This makes PNG ideal for graphics, logos, screenshots, and images with text. However, PNG files can be 3–5× larger than equivalent JPEG files — a PNG photograph that is 2MB may be only 400–600KB as JPEG at 90% quality with virtually identical visual results.
Convert PNG to JPG when: uploading to exam portals with strict file size limits (50–100KB), sending photo attachments by email, sharing in messaging apps where PNG uploads can be slow, or printing from services that only accept JPEG. Do not convert PNG to JPG if the image contains text, line art, graphics with flat colours, or transparent backgrounds — PNG is superior for these use cases.
BMP files are uncompressed Windows bitmap images, typically produced by Windows Paint, older scanners, and legacy software. They have no compression whatsoever — a BMP version of an image can be 20–30× larger than its JPEG equivalent. Converting BMP to JPG reduces file size by 95%+ while maintaining excellent visual quality. BMP files are not accepted by any online portal or web service.
GIF files use lossless LZW compression limited to 256 colours. For photographs with millions of colours, GIF produces poor quality and large file sizes compared to JPEG. Convert GIF to JPG for photographic content, or to PNG for graphics. Note: animated GIFs lose animation when converted — only the first frame is converted to JPG/PNG.
TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is a professional archival format used by high-end scanners, cameras in RAW processing workflows, and medical imaging equipment. TIFF files support lossless compression but can be extremely large — a scanned A4 document at 300 DPI in TIFF is typically 25–50MB. Convert to JPG for web, email, and portal uploads; convert to PNG to maintain lossless quality at a smaller file size.
